Yuki Schuette

Yuki is a second-year undergraduate neuroscience student at UBC. She is passionate about women’s health, particularly relating to female contraceptives, and is deeply interested in how medical advancements can better support women’s reproductive choices in the future. She aspires to pursue an MD, with the goal of becoming a resource for women navigating their healthcare needs and advocating for education on often stigmatized topics related to women’s health and sexual well-being.

Lauren Seldon

Lauren is completing a second bachelors degree in Psychology at the University of British Columbia. She brings with her a prior BA in Integrated Media from Emily Carr University and 10 years of experience in adult education and training for software companies including Apple and Hootsuite. Lauren also acts as Director of Technology for the Canadian non-denominational charity, Power of Education Africa, and is proud to help provide young women in rural Kenya with scholarships to secondary and post-secondary school. Lauren is delighted to contribute to the incredible work being done in the Brotto lab, and specializes in tech-based treatment applications such as Virtual Reality Exposure Therapy.

Nahanni Musiani

Nahanni is a 4th year student in the Bsc Neuroscience program. She is completing her neuroscience capstone project under the supervision of Dr. Lori Brotto. This project will investigate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of sexual arousal which underlie sexual aversion.

Ash Mukundan

Ash is an undergraduate student at UBC, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Creative Writing. With a strong commitment toward promoting inclusivity, Ash’s academic and professional interests focus on fostering compassion and enhancing understanding of the nuanced experiences of marginalized groups regarding sexuality. Ash plans to pursue graduate studies in Counselling Psychology, eventually hoping to specialize in supporting queer, neurodivergent and POC clients through a trauma-informed and sex-positive lens. They aim to destigmatize conversations surrounding sex and pleasure in society, by encouraging candor and devaluating the role shame typically plays when discussing sexuality.
Ash presently volunteers for the eSense nonbinary and eSense cancer studies, eager to develop their research skills and knowledge during their time with the lab. In their free time, Ash enjoys creative hobbies such as illustration, poetry, and photography, as well as social activities like playing video games and rollerblading with friends

Piper is a fourth-year undergraduate honours psychology student at UBC. She completed her third-year honours thesis with the lab, and will complete a directed study with the lab in her fourth year. Her research interests include sexual dysfunctions, interpersonal relationships, and behavioural neuroendocrinology. After completing her undergraduate program, she plans to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Lareina is an undergraduate student majoring in Psychology and minoring in Family Studies at the University of British Columbia. She is passionate about understanding the biases and barriers that women face when it comes to sexual health and coming up with ways to remove these barriers while raising awareness about women’s sexual health problems. She is also interested in looking at how there may not be enough awareness about sexual desire and arousal disorders in women because of social stereotypes. This interests her as she wants to find out if not addressing these disorders can lead to mental health difficulties. She hopes to attend grad school for either clinical psychology or counselling psychology in the future. Lareina is currently working on SHAPE which aims to mobilize knowledge about sexual dysfunction and genito-pelvic pain in women and genderdiverse persons.

Vicky is an incoming second-year Science undergraduate student at UBC, hoping to study neuroscience and public health. She is interested in how socioeconomic and cultural factors affect the quality of women’s reproductive health care, alongside the associated psychological impacts. Jenny is completing her BSc in Behavioural Neuroscience with a minor in Gender, Race, Sexuality & Social Justice (GRSJ). Passionate about inclusive health care, they intend to pursue a career in medicine as an OBGYN to incorporate queer and decolonial justice-work into patient-centered practice. She is excited to learn about and help contribute to sexual health research during her involvement in the VIVID study. Anilā Lacroix

Anilā Lacroix is currently pursuing her Psychology Major and Philosophy Honours degree at UBC. She is working towards becoming a trauma-informed counsellor with ongoing research experience in the effectiveness of mindfulness for improving self-concept and self-actualization within or following adverse experiences. Additionally, she designed a 12-week group therapy mindfulness counselling program for women with depression.
Prior to these pursuits, Anilā was an experienced yoga teacher and teacher trainer who taught a wide variety of yoga practices and philosophies for the last 20 years. Her academic focus combines philosophy of mind with behavioural neuroscience and mindfulness behavioural therapy. Anilā has received scholarships for her academic work and personal life experience, as well as been awarded recognition for her work with at-risk women and youth. -

She is interested in how individual differences and personal factors can act as possible barriers for women to seek help or express concerns regarding levels of sexual desire. As a volunteer for the eSense project, she is excited to learn more about how CBT and MBT are incorporated into sexual health research.
